Online Therapy in California: Q&A

In light of the coronavirus pandemic, therapists everywhere are moving to video & phone therapy, or telehealth. Thank goodness for technology that can allow therapy to continue in a time where anxiety is high and social supports are needed. Here are common questions & answers regarding teletherapy:

What is teletherapy?

The definition varies by state regulations, but basically includes any form of thereapeutic intervention conducted over digital means. This could mean email, text, phone, and video interactions.

How does teletherapy work?

Much the same as your face to face sessions, but over video. I use a secure platform called VSee for video therapy sessions. Find a private, quiet space with a secure internet connection.

Is teletherapy effective?

Absolutely. Research indicates that teletherapy is just as effective as face to face counseling for many issues. Be sure to schedule your free 15 minute consultation to confirm you’re a good fit for online counseling or if you would benefit from a different level of care.

How do I get the most of out teletherapy sessions?

Prepare your mind and space by setting aside this time, just as you would if you’re going to the office. Turn off email or text notifications, close your emails, refrain from doing other things while talking to your therapist. Make the most of this time by committing to be present. Give yourself a few minutes before session to quiet down, light a candle, get water or tea, bring your journal & pen, etc. It can be helpful to settle in a few minutes early, just as you would in the waiting room.

Will my insurance cover video sessions?

It’s best to check with your specific insurance provider about how they handle telehealth. Some providers make no distinction between in person vs. teletherapy, while others will not reimburse for teletherapy sessions.
